Special Interest Groups


   These are the Special Interest Groups within MWM.  They meet once in a while, and might have some sort of newsletter or other communication.
  • ADR SIG (Dave Cahn): Practitioners of alternative dispute resolution ­ and other members interested in the field ­ to discuss professional development, best practices, and use of ADR in Mensa.  (National)
  • Art SIG (Charles J. Divine): People interested in the arts who get together to attend gallery openings, work on art, etc.
  • BLAMs: Blazing Lightly-Armed Mensans (Adam Beslove): Non­political SIG for fire­arms enthusiasts.  (National)
  • Book SIG (Barbara Werthmann): Monthly meeting to discuss a book; having read it is not required.
  • Bridge SIG (Sheldon Hofferman): Friendly party bridge, accompanied by great food and great company.
  • Circle (Catherine Woytowicz): A haven for those highly accomplished in several diverse fields, an Explorato­ rium, and stage for renaissance people.
  • Cruise SIG (Jackie and David Friedlander): Whether planning your first cruise, or reliving memorable ones from the past, this SIG is for you.
  • E-I-E-I-O SIG (David Shapiro):  Electricians, inspectors, electrical engineers, and interested others.  (National)
  • Gen-X SIG (Heather Poirier): All Mensans born in the years 1961 through 1981 are eligible for membership in the GenX SIG. Here you’ll find hundreds of your cohorts discussing every­ thing under the sun.
  • Gen-Y SIG (Allison Rice): Discussion and amusement for Mensans born between 1980 and 1990.
  • Geocaching SIG (Niklas Kylvag)
  • Gourmensans (Nancy & Paul Vogel): Monthly meeting at novel, ethnic, and reasonably­priced restaurants.
  • Human Potential (Lila Mallette): Exploring the different methods for developing our human poten­tial and shar­ing reports of our individual experiences in that area.
  • IDEA SIG (Catherine Woytowicz): An intellectual free inquiry salon in the tradition of Inklings, the Anasazi, and the Manhattan Project.
  • Innovitation, 2% For 100% (Ravi Bansal): We aspire to create and adopt innovative solutions to improve our lives through the open interchange of ideas and sharing of life experiences.  (National)
  • Investment & Speculation SIG (Ben Perchik): Sharing of info on investments, mainly stocks, funds, real estate, precious met­ als, collectibles, etc. assisted by an electronic LIST­SERV.
  • LGBTQ SIG (Riki Wilchins): If you’re gay, trans, a partner, family­member, friend or just plain friendly, this group in DC is for you! Let’s meet monthly at Busboys & Poets (U & 14th) to chat, make new friends, chew over current events and some good tasty food.
  • Listeners of Classical Music (Ken Zabielski): Quiet conversation, friendly atmosphere, snacks and pizza to share, and classical music.
  • MWM Currents (Bruce Ford): Online community of friendly Mensans in the MWM area, including all of Maryland, discussing currents in events of our lives and Mensa. Join to com­municate and plan to get together with other friendly Mensans.
  • MWM.Org SIG (Dave Aronson): Help support and improve the mwm.org web site. Any MWM member is wel­come. Technical knowledge appreciated but not required.
  • Naturist / Nudism (Dave Remine)
  • Parapsychology SIG (Stanley Korn): Investigation of psi phenomena and the paranormal in general. Past meetings have included discussion of, and speakers on, the nature and operation of psi, sharing psychic experiences and talents, and exercises to develop and demon­ strate psychic ability.
  • Patrick O'Brian SIG (Susan Wenger):  Discussion of the writings of Patrick O’Brian, author of “The Best Historical Fiction Ever Written” per N.Y. Times “Review of Books.”  (National)
  • Pizza SIG (Kevin McCall): Very informal no–RSVP­-required dinner buffet event at Joe’s Pizza and Pasta, in Arlington.
  • Science SIG (Michael Hendrickson): Discussion of the latest scientific news/issues and some not so new.
  • Theatre SIG (Leslie Horne): For enjoyment of theatre and other live entertainment in/around DC. Re­duced­ price ticket options available for some events.
  • Tourist SIG (Jared Levine): Join us as we take ownership of the “tourist” label and visit both well-­known and some obscure landmarks throughout the Metro D.C. area.
  • YSM [Young Single Mensa] (Catherine Woytowicz): Catering to Gen X, Y, and Z, but open to others, YSM seeks out fun in and around DC. Some events are advertised only in our weekly e­mail.
